As Creative Director at the digital services and content development firm 33Delivered I am having the opportunity of a lifetime to design for the iconic American Museum of Natural History. I have been designing their special exhibition websites, as well as this Dinosaurs site.
Our client (Chief Digital Office at the Museum) was charged with creating "the best dinosaur site in the world", worthy of these creatures' iconic stature at the museum. Content needed to be king, and so I came up with a design that let content rule but made it exciting and dynamic, bringing the content alive for the visitor, inspiring them to delve deeper.
We targeted three main types of site visitors: wanderers, explorers and deep divers, making certain that each would find a path appealing to their information seeking style.
I made the most effective use of homepage real estate (you can see the final approved homepage design above) by having a dynamic lead introducing content targeting each of these audience types.
One of the trickiest sections of the site to design was the interactive Dinosaur Family Tree. I did the information architecture in addition to the visual and user-interface design for this section. Through this interactive experience the visitor is introduced to the dinosaur cladogram showing them how each branch of the tree represents a turning point in the evolution of the various dinosaur groups.
The resulting site presents a wealth of content in an exciting and dynamic way, ultimately furthering the museum's educational objectives. It is scheduled to launch along with the entire AMNH site redesign sometime in November of 2011.
Below you will see a few of the interior site section top-levels, and below those the initial designs I did before it was determined that the site would launch within the new site shell.
